Thankyou.
I suppose the very first sample of Moncastro countermark on a copper specimen.

Beautiful specimen! Congratulations Dario! The c/m seems about 7mm in diameter?...The cross looks like a true "Genovese" one, do you know any silver coin with identical c/m?

Yes, circa 8 mm. Silvers with identical style of cross exist. Could be described, it italian, as "Croce biforcata, lievemente potenziata".

Vladimir hi. See here: http://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=10037

Dating of these c/ms is not sure, but sure is that's after middle 15th cent; also a rare Tana with this c/m is known.

Thank you, Dario! In this case host-coin was in circulation some 100-150 years, when c/m was applied, isn`t too nice?

yes, really nice! But I'm not so surprised: I have seen some genoese c/ms on roman coins of II cent.

This is definitely not an Asprokastron c/m.

Copper coins were never countermarked in the city at that time, only silver specimens. Furthemore, all known countermarks are a heraldic Greek cross between four roundles. Here we can see a kind of Maltese or Bolnisi cross. Finally, the copper host coin was presumably struck long before the known siver coins countermarked in the city.

Either this particular coin was counterstamped outside Asprokastron or it was a practical joke.

The host coin is currently attributed to Tuda Mengku 679-686 » Multiple pul

c/m is presumable a modern forgery

Dear Dario, would you kindly add the reverse of this coin? Was this lot you have bought expensive?

As usual there are my comments ascribed to "charm".

Vladimir hi,
I will try to get as soon as possible a good picture of reverse (I have to ask a person, but in a short time I should get it); I hope this helps.

As I remember, the price paid was rather ridiculous (order of magnitude perhaps $ 2-3 ea.); is for this reason that it seems strange to me, beyond other considerations (=I can't proclame myself as expert of these issues, so my reliability is certainly limited: as I can judge about, of course not only c/m but whole coin could be a fake!)

Thank you, Dario! Coin looks OK, patina seems to be genuine - an old one. As for c/m I am not sure, patina is not the same on it.

Thankyou to you, Vladimir! A part of Patina on opposite side of c/m is lacking (detached, fragmented). The remaining part seems in continuity with the surface of coin

Yes, this could be indication that c/m was applied on already patinated coin Sad

This must be the first proven forgery of Asprokastron c/m. Congratulations to the proud owner, the coin is a crown jewel in any collection of medieval colonial coinage as an unique mystification
