L. Cao F6 - very nice with Karlsonator 6

F6 sounds lovely on classical bass viola - very sensitive, excellent top end - beautiful. Greg B's little (~12X12X21") Karlson variant is good compliment and probably more effective/better sounding than a larger volume lower tuned ML-TL. Detailed plans for the Karlsonator 6 can be found at fullrangedriver buried in the Karlson section

with good recordings, the little Karlson variant and F6 L.Cao play nicely & smoothly on vocals. flamenco guitar, cello & piano sonata. There's no need for any helper tweeter. For those not familiar with Greg B's design, here's a drawing (a larger plan is downloadable from his album)

'Zilla,
If you want to convert a box to one with a Karlson aperture, I suggest the Karlsonator as shown above and not a Karlson proper (multi-chambered bandpass reflex style a la K15). Those do not scale well below 12 in driver at all (no bass). A Karlsonator scaled for a 6 in or 8 in driver can work very well - check out some of the sims in the Karlsonator thread. My guess is FE168Z can work well. I may have sim'd it already can't recall off hand.

here are the specs on the F6 model - -cone diameter is roughly 5" not including the surround. Add 1/2 of the surround and its ~5.125" diameter - so SD for the F6 would be ~130sq.cm vs 88.25 for an Alpair 10P, or 147.41 for 12P.

search Ebay with these terms "match pair 2pcs Lcao HiEND 6.5inch fullrange speaker ,PK lowther fostex"

Zilla - if your box has this aspect then you might make a Karlsonator - otherwise it probably would still convert to some sort of K - probably with higher cutoff. Rear volume should not go below (Vas*fs*qts)/50 as a rough rule.

F6 spec (there's also an alnico version at 3X the cost) - I think F6 would be appreciated by FR lovers. Delivery was very fast - maybe a week or so from China.

I have an old, unused box from a discarded vintage AR speaker that's just about those dimensions. Maybe I can convert into a Karlson?!? So that's a six inch version or can I use an eight inch driver?

I have a Fostex 168z... will that work?

I concur with xrk971: a scaled 'standard' Karlson will not have deep bass. Karlsonator is a better choice, but of course I am biased. ;) The specs for the old FE168Z are ballpark, so it should work, but I haven't tried to sim it.

hey guys - what kind of K do you think would be most appropriate for a little B&C 10" with the following spec? a 12" could be used but this would be "cute" and probably very potent with an internally mounted K-tube with decent compression driver coming in around 1K8 - not sure if the 5mm xmax could be used without audible "gargle" - might get another dB sensitivity with half that much xmax in a B&C10. Eminence has a new 10 called LA10850 which may play well but the B&C has the prettier frame :D

LA10850 spec - fwiw it has low moving mass and a 4" coil so thermal compression may be relatively low

the goal would be good quality sound and have more punch than a direct radiator or blh. Of course the K-tube could be mounted on top and still blend well. The result would have better treble power response than 6-8" fullrange drivers and hopefully do 120dB peaks without strain.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

hi KaffiMann - I'd imagine the 3mm figure to be peak to peak - - my box may have a dip in that area but things sound pretty good. I've not tried their filter -- from reading on another forum the filter suggested for one of their 8" wasn't centered properly.

Look at the impedance test I just ran on the unplayed F6 - that's one clue how they're getting good treble extension - impedance at 20KHz is only 10 ohm http://i.imgur.com/lPXJYKl.gif

Thank you. That says it all. Seems like a well thought out driver. Would possibly be fun to combine in a sealed chamber with a 12" maybe 15" well built BR, 1st order xo between 2-500hz. No other adjustments needed :)

Sure that karlsonator does not have a small peak at 800hz then? That might be the great part of the combination.

re:800 = don't know if I'm that lucky:)2

here's impedance of unit 2 L.Cao F6 (never played) free air vs unit 1 (played a bit but not hard enough to see the cone move) with unit 1 installed in Greg B's Karlsonator 6 prototype - with this driver there seems to be no defined 3rd Z peak - maybe a bit right below 300Hz. There's only a little fluffed polyfil in the stub, and a 25mm thick polyfil pad on the cabinet's bottom.
