Thread: gigabyte ga-990fxa-ud3 usb ports not working

I've tried booting ubuntu 13.04 and 10.04 on this board, when I get to the desktop on the live cd I can't use the mouse and keyboard. I've tried different usb ports to no avail, has anyone been able to get ubuntu or any distro of linux working properly on this board?

Have a similar Gigabyte board and have had no problems with it. You should go into the BIOS settings and see what is there that will allow you to enable Legacy USB support. You will probably need to turn that on.

Also, if these are USB 3.0 ports, you are going to have major problems. Legacy mode may allow them to work in USB 2.0 mode, which should then work for you.

I had se same issue. In my case I have Gigabyte GA-990xa-UD3 (revision 3.0) and I ma trying to install ubuntu server from USB. The install starts till I select "Install Ubuntu Server" and when it commes back to the select Language the keyboard is dead as all USB ports.

If I try to install Desktop version from USB I do not even manage to load the live desktop. This is normal as I am trying to install from USB and as part of the installation process start-up It loads kernel or modules that are incompatible with USB on the board and fails. In your case as you are with a live CD is not a problem at the same point because it cas still read from CD even the USBs are already dead.

It is a pain in the as that this board is listed here and here as Ubuntu friendly. Provably it is just that revision 1.0 and 1.1 are ubuntu friendly but not the new version. I will tray to enter this to ubuntu friendly and see if it helps someone.

My plan is to use an PS/2 keyboard and see if I can install ubunto from a DVD reader, a windows harddirver. I think now there is a friendly way to do this but I do not want to compromise performance or depend on windows to run. I will remove windows HDD later.

Once I have the ubuntu server running try to fix this USB issue. Also I think there is a problem with the LAN driver that would need to be fixed.

I found some information on ubuntu.fr (here) . Sorry I do not speak french and I used google to transalte it to my mother language. My understanding is that once ubuntu is up and running you can fix this

gandalfbz: You should check your BIOS USB settings as I had suggested in post #2.

Also, I have tried myself using a ps/2 keyboard to install Ubuntu over the years, and in all cases, it was unable to detect the keyboard. And, that was using motherboards that had ps/2 plugs. If yours does not, you will probably have to use a ps/2-to-USB adapter -- which puts you back in the same state using USB ports.

I did already checked USB bios settings with no luck at all. It does not make any change.

Yet I did not have a chance to test. I will keep you posted.

In the BIOS, set IOMMU to "Enabled". That fixed both USB and networking for me.

That worked like charm!!! I had played with all USB related options at BIOS but never touched IOMMU... Never thought that it was related. Actually I didn't knew what was for.

Once I was able to boot into linux I found some errors about AMD-VI that I am still looking into. At some point I readed that they might be related to IOMMU set-up... I hope it is something else and I can fix it. Mainly I want to run Virtual Servers here for testing

a·maz·ing! I've been trying to install 13.04 on this new box w/the gigabyte ga-990fxa-uda since last Thursday. Every time I encountered mouse+keyboard locking. Tried many things: clone drive w/13.04 on it from another puter, linuxmint, fedora livecds. The only thing that I could install was Meerkat Maverick. I also tried enable/disable legacy/uefi this, legacy/uefi that in the bios.

Then tonight before bed I googled "is GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 compatible with ubuntu?" and clicked on this very first link. Not much hope reading the first responses... til I got to quattro_cs'. Success.

How did you find the solution? And what does 'iommu' even mean?

my Gigabyte 990XA-UD3 also had this problem but the change in bios did the trick thanks quatto_cs,
