Sweet family moments

I see some people are talking about the extent to which this series fits into yuri. Don't get me wrong, I do love me some yuri, but that's not really what I find most interesting about this series. One of the things that's really nice is how family-oriented the story is. How often do you find that in a manga? The kid is super cute, and a lot of the story involves questions of childrearing. How do you balance raising a child with working to earn money? How much should you depend on others to help you raise your child? The family depicted in this manga is not exactly a traditional one (three adults, none of whom are currently in a romantic relationship with each other), and the characters have to decide the familial roles and responsibilities for themselves. It’s interesting to see the ways that they work things out.

Although the characters deal with difficult issues and sometimes get lost in dark thoughts, this darkness is balanced with a lot of sweet moments. Even the romantic storylines are innocent and cute so far — characters express love for each other by helping each other out and taking care of one another. It also might be worth mentioning that this is the only manga I can think of that I equally appreciate all the possible love interests. Everyone seems like a realistic, well-rounded character. Even if some of them (*cough cough Michiru*) have personality flaws that made me strongly dislike them in the beginning, basically they’re all good people who are trying their best. Overall, a beautiful josei slice of life about adults figuring out how to live together.

While it's true that right now Maya and Michiru are in a relatively comfortable place with their relationship as flat-mates, it seems to me that as time passes some sort of turning-point will be reached, forcing a decision either to separate or stay together. Michiru has to grow up and stop depending on Maya, which will probably necessitate her leaving, but on the other hand they have grown to become a family with Yuu-chan and Niko and it would be an awful waste to destroy that. And although Maya *is* getting to notice Kuwabara, I really cannot imagine them getting together... Her feelings seem more friendly and pitying rather than romantic.

That aside, it's a great series depicting an alternative family - one of the very few out there as far as I know - which serves as a sort of growing-up story (for adults) as well. Highly recommended!

I like to consider it shoujoai/yuri . . .

I like the story a ton, and I personally enjoy the love between Maya and Michiru.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I like how much space Maya has in heart to forgive Michiru when she becomes overreactionary. There easily could have been alternate endings and you might not like Michiru very much. However, I think that Michiru's jealousy shows she has realized her nostalgic feelings for Maya, while Maya wants to find a way to keep everyone together, overcoming her self-doubt.

The characters evolve through one another's emotions, and the art is too lovable - Maya and Michiru pretty obviously still like one another making for a nice shoujoai feel.
I still can't get over the bejeweled eyes - too cute!

[BTW, this review is written as of Chapter 5, so it has yet to take into account any newer plot developments]

I agree with the other reviewer to some extent. It seems Michiru has lingering feelings but Maya is trying to move on because Michiru hurt her too much. I have nothing against yuri/shoujo ai, it's just the series is doing so well without it. It should be about Maya and Michiru moving past their relationship and finding themselves rather than them re-realizing their feelings for each other. Michiru has a lot to learn about being a mother (I didn't even realize Yuu-chan was her kid at first) and is ridiculously childish, as seen by the way she up and leaves Maya twice by note. To rekindle the romance between Michiru and Maya would just ruin the current flow and enjoyment. (Especially since Maya is getting to know Kuwabara)!

Other than that, I really like this series. It's cute, pretty light, and the characters (other than Michiru) are instantly likable.

Im sorry but i just cant see this as anything but a yuri romance despite the endless talking about friendship, because its pretty clear that michiru and maya still have feelings for each other. Anybody else agree?
