We are now a transportation unit! 8th Group, 512 Transportation Company. With the completion of our Gun Truck “Business As Usual” and the modification of several of the teams personal military vehicles we now have enough equipment to field a representation of a convoy in Vietnam. Visit this link to see more on the truck. When you couple this with the UH-1H we also crew we have now developed a truly kick-ass living history presentation. The big thing now is we need more members!
It takes a minimum of 4 to crew the chopper. I would be good to have at least six troops on the deck! We need 4 to crew the gun truck, three to crew the escort jeep, two to crew the cargo truck. Do you see where I am going with this? We need recruits! Dedicated people to display all this equipment!

The purpose of this unit is to portray the military personnel of the Vietnam War to the benefit and promotion of the Kansas Museum of Military History. Members of this group are made up of volunteers and museum members. Anybody interested in participating and is willing to commit tp supporting historical accuracy are welcome. To honor the veterans, our authenticity in uniforms and equipment standards will be of the highest standard both in the field and in the barracks. These standards are not meant to deter prospective members, but to outline the expectations that we have of our membership. Only by creating and maintaining such high standards in uniform, equipment, and attitude can we respectfully represent the veterans of this conflict.
This mission is accomplished by organizing displays of personnel, equipment and presenting lifestyle and history of the military in Vietnam. We have focused on one unit, but incorporate members presenting information about the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. Our team can be found out with the public, at Veteran’s events, parades and other public venues promoting the interests and missions of the Kansas Museum of Military History. By setting up our encampment and inviting the public to experience and explore we hope to educate them about what it was like for the troops.
We are part of the Kansas Museum of Military History, not a separate entity, with members of the museum board of directors participating with the group. Helping with the presentation of th museum’s Vietnam era UH-1H Helicopter, tail number 65-9700 and the increadibly accurate reproduction of a Vietnam convoy gun truck named “Business As Usual”.
The Last Patrol is accepting recruits. Be sure to check the unit bylaws and reference information to get an idea of what it takes to become a trooper for The Last Patrol!

VFW 6401 is conducting it’s annual “Salute to Veterans” on 10 May in Bonner Springs. I am in-charge of the Vietnam War displays. I just found your site and am interested in having your group come. The VFW will provide lunch and there will be other periods represented. Vehicle displays and presentations to the public will be given several times during the day. I can send photos from last year’s event if you are interested. Your group looks pretty good and we’re trying to avoid any groups that do not accurately portray the Army of the war-period (the ‘Apocalypse Now’ guys with “drive-on” rags on their heads are not what we want). Last week a group of fellow reenactors, living historians, and military historians (some are all-the-same) put up displays to raise funds for a veterans memorial in Leavenworth.
I put out a Vietnam display, a substantial amount of gear my father brought home and stuff I was issued in 1971. I’ve resorted to now buying stuff I didn’t have as well.
If you send an email address, I’ll send photos of displays. Warning: they ‘eat’ up mass quantities of electronic space! I’ll send a couple at a time so I don’t take all your email space at once.

There’s some guys that do a Special Forces camp at the Reclaiming our Heritage Event. The units I know of are the 1st Hounds, 16th Medical Detachment, 5th Special Forces, and Vietnam Living History.

Thank you. We put a lot of work into it over about a year. We worked a couple of days a week on it. Hard part was coming up with the funds to buy the two .50 cals! I taught myself to weld as part of this. We read a lot of books and did research like crazy. The best reward is getting good reviews from folks, the old gun trucks crews like it also, that is a big plus for us and our efforts to be accurate!

We do Vietnam living history displays. We also do a small reenactment skit for a veteran’s reunion, that is how we got our start. The Patrol is also involved with a military history museum here, The Kansas Museum of Military History in Augusta Kansas. WE helped the museum build a convoy gun truck, and we staff many of the museum’s exhibits at the museum events as well as many off site displays. We crew a UH-1H Huey, the gun truck, my personal M151 as well as other members M35, M37 and M38 vehicles. We just started restoring an OH58 Kiowa for the museum. We do not shoot blanks, preferring to allow the crowd to mix in with us and our equipment. There are several facebook sites if you have facebook account. Just discovered your pages. Thanks for keeping the history alive. As a 21-month veteran of the 1st Cavalry Division, Airmobile (1/5), 3/69-1/71, your pages bring back memories and resurrect details long forgotten (I’ve been looking for rucksack straps for a very long time, but never could quite recall exactly what they were from… we used them to strap down our pant legs above the calf/below the knee. They’re just generally handy straps to have and I’ve never found any suitable substitute). My dad lives in Larned, KS, so I may just have to make an excursion to Augusta next time I make it back there.

The volunteers, who are also most of the Patrol, meet most every Thursday evening about 1730 till they get tired. Also a lot of the Saturday mornings. This is at the Kansas Museum of Military History in Augusta, Kansas.

The Last Patrol is based out of the Kansas Museum of Military History in Augusta, Ks. We usually display in concert with museum activities. We also set up camp at the Veteran’s reunion at El Dorado lake every July.

Sixteen is OK. You need to be in the Wichita area or nearby and able to get yourself to the museum and events. You will be expected to assemble a proper uniform as well. Let me know if you are interested!
