Agnus Dei biography
AGNUS DEI is a project of Gerald Krampl, band leader and keyboard player of former Austrian bands KYRIE ELEISON and INDIGO. He performs music inspired by his wife Hilde's simple yet elegant poems. Although the bilingual (German and English) lyrics are enclosed in the booklets, none are sung. The music style could be described as meditative new-age piano with keyboard orchestration and a tinge of prog.

AGNUS DEI have released four albums todate: "Lemuria" is an epic fantasy of the endangered crystal world, and "Merlyn" is a mystic dream journey to the inner world and visions of the great wizard. Unfortunately, Hilde died of cancer after its release and Krampl used some of the poems she had left behind to compose "Angelos" in 2003, then "Gaia" (a love song to earth) in 2004. Of the four albums, the latter is the more up tempo, more percussive and less meditative of the lot. AGNUS DEI generally goes for ambience and their albums are a pleasant, if limited and predictable listen.

Designed for dreaming, relaxing and comforting the soul, this material is recommended strictly for fans of VANGELIS, KITARO, David Lanz and the likes.

3 stars "Designed for dreaming, relaxing and comforting the soul" says the PA profile about the four outputs from this project. Gerald Krampl, the sole man in Agnus Dei, lost his wife Hilde and the other part of Agnus Dei which originally was a duo of Hilde and Gerald. His tribute to his wife and a mark of loss is this album.

Hence, it is very difficult to really review this album. But nobody else has done it and this album is overdue a review.

The music on Angelos, as on the other Agnus Dei albums, consists of piano with some keyboards supporting the piano driven melodies. The difference on Angelos is that the music is very dark at times. The darker side of the piano music drives the music. Large parts of this album is clearly a sort of a funeral dirge. Other parts is clearly meant to soothe and comfort everyone who loved Hilde, Gerald himself included.

Angelos is a moving piece of music. No doubts about that. It is proof that you can actually express your grief into good music. I personally would not have chosen solely piano to express my sorrows. But I understand where Gerald comes from. I understand where he was heading with this album. Angelos is his soul ripped open and poured into this album.

Angelos is also a good album with a lot of moods and tones which really means something. It reminds me a lot about a stripped down version of Alan Gowen's final piece of music before he passed away. As a funeral dirge, Angelos works perfectly. I actually like Angelos and it does comfort my soul too. And I neither know Gerald and I did not know Hilde either. But this album is good. Sometimes less is more.

1 stars Reviews like this is not funny to write and publish. In particular when the music is about a beloved wife of the musician who died in such tragic circumstances. I also interviewed Gerald Krampl one year ago and he is a great human being. A human being I really appreciate.

The music on this album is mostly piano with some flutes and keyboards included. It is entirely instrumental.

ProgArchives is probably totally wrong place for this album and Agnus Dei (I fear). The right place for this music is a new age or a classical music archive. The reason is that there is no dynamics and not much of melodies going on here. The song titles are promising. But there is nothing here besides of a piano and some mood noise in the background. Nothing. Hence my verdict and a heavy, heavy heart. But me too is responsible to both myself and a higher power and I cannot lie.
