And There Shall Come...a Leader! Surrender!/Covenant The Transformers Cybertron: The Middle Years! Target: 2006

Iacon functioned as the heart of Autobot territory on Cybertron, and appears to have been the base of the Council of Autobot Elders prior to the departure of Optimus Prime and his comrades from the planet. It was termed "greatest of the city-states" for the Autobots on Cybertron.

When the planet suffered from global fuel shortages, Iacon was one of the big cities who monopolised what resources there were. Unlike its rivals, Tarn and Vos, Iacon's council gave out rationed fuel to its smaller neighbours. When the Vos-Tarn war broke out, Iacon accepted refugees but decided to let the two cities wipe themselves out: a mistake, as Megatron would use them as a scapegoat to fire up the survivors. State Games

Without Prime's leadership, the Autobot war effort fell further and further into disarray—but Iacon's defences remained steady. The Decepticons, led by Trannis succeeding Megatron, besieged the city and continued to attempt its capture for many thousands of years. Eventually, being in control of the remainder of Cybertron, Trannis decided it simply was not worth capturing Iacon intact and ordered his troops to level the city, which they did to such an extent that by the time Optimus Prime returned briefly to Cybertron, the city was completely in ruins.

Still, the Autobots maintained a presence in Iacon, if only from small resistance bases in its ruins. Autobase itself was located within these ruins at one point, and the Wreckers operated from this base conducting strikes and raids on Decepticon holdings on a continuing basis.

Generation 1 cartoon continuity

As one of the two starter continuities, The Transformers cartoon was not influenced by the Marvel comics' depiction of Iacon as Cybertron's capital city. Instead, Iacon was the name of the Autobots' headquarters on Cybertron, appearing as a large, domed fortress colored gold. When Iacon needed to be actually shown in the Marvel comics, the artists took "inspiration" from the cartoon and reinterpreted the domed fortress as the Great Dome, a defensive structure surrounding Iacon Central that was the only part of Iacon to survive the millennia of war, thus becoming synonymous with the city. Whether such a history should be applied to the cartoon version is debatable, but the domed fortress was "just" called Cybertron Autobot Base in Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers and The Headmasters cartoon. Moreso, War for Cybertron fiction has established that the Hall of Records, a building that appeared first in the The Transformers cartoon, is located in Iacon. What goes for one continuity family does not necessarily go for another, but Cybertron's locations have thus far been reasonably alike across them. Either way, see the aforementioned buildings' pages for more information on what-could-be-Iacon in the original cartoon.

After the Great Upgrade, Iacon was paved over and replaced with Cybertropolis. During the Spark War, Megatron led Optimus Primal to believe that clues to the locations of the lost sparks could be located in Iacon's ruins, so Primal and Nightscream went searching there. They came across a holographic statue of the legendary Optimus Prime, which suddenly moved and picked up Optimus Primal. Primal went into a sort of trance in which Prime told him not to worry about the disappearance of the Oracle, because it still existed within him. Primal accepted this idea and tried to access the Oracle data within him, only to see Optimus Prime's visage suddenly change into Megatron's. Megatron accessed Optimus Primal's mind to obtain the Oracle data, while Primal took a risk by not resisting but using the connection to figure out where the missing sparks were. Meanwhile, Nightscream was attacked by Thrust and his drones. Outnumbered, the young Maximal was nearly killed. He was saved by the sudden appearance of Noble, who by unknown means and for unknown reasons had also found his way to Iacon. Upon seeing the creature, the drones fled in panic and Noble chased after them. Next, Primal finally awoke from his trance and ordered Nightscream to follow him and rendezvous with the others. Iacon was one of Cybertron's city-states; unusually, the city incorporated three of the planet's twelve primary hot spots, from which new Transformers were born: Rivets Field, Vespertine Blue, and Port Residua. How to Say Goodbye and Mean It When the Crystal City went missing in the wake of the First Cybertronian Civil War some ten million years ago, The First Who Was Named Iacon's portentous position in the planet's history might explain why the city was eventually recognized as Cybertron's new capital. During his reign over Cybertron, Nova Prime launched the Ark-1 from Rivets Field. Black Planet Nova Prime and his inner retinue vanished from history after crossing the Benzuli Expanse, and in the aftermath Iacon became home to the Senate, who, under the jurisdiction of Nominus Prime, organized the planet's day-to-day affairs from within the Grand Imperium. A memorial for the ship and its crew was eventually commissioned somewhere in the city. Chaos Theory Part 2 In time, however, many Cybertronians would come to feel that most Senators chose to live cushy lives in Iacon instead of actually helping their constituents. Endgame Over the course of war, Iacon became the primary stronghold and staging ground for the Autobots. Half a million years ago, however, the Decepticons laid siege to the city; realizing that he would need to keep Metroplex and his miraculous spacebridge technology out of Decepticon hands, Alpha Trion and Metroplex departed Cybertron, leaving what remained of Iacon to the Autobots. The war eventually became too much for the planet to bear, and in the wake of Thunderwing's world-ending rampage Cybertron as left incapable of supporting life, necessitating the final evacuation and abandonment of Iacon as the war moved off-world. Stormbringer #1 In the wake of the D-Void's attack on the planet, Cybertron "reset" itself into a primordial state, wiping Iacon and every other Cybertronian city off the map. The Autobots made their new headquarters in the remains of Kimia Facility, which had crashed on the planet following the Chaos War. The Death of Optimus Prime When hordes of neutral Transformers began returning home, they landed their ships and set up camp where it had once been - the "new" Iacon soon grew into a shanty town, a ramshackle mixture of landed spacecraft and temporary housing. As the Autobots, Decepticons, and NAILs struggled to cooperate, Hot Rod announced his intention to assemble a crew and search for the mythical Knights of Cybertron. Their ship, the Lost Light, launched off Iacon... only to seemingly explode moments after takeoff. How to Say Goodbye and Mean It In the meantime, various noncombatants chose to try and begin a functioning base of commerce in the new Iacon, including the grand re-opening of Maccadam's Old Oil House. A Better Tomorrow

Tensions continued to rise between the three factions until Megatron returned from the wilderness, kicking off a series of destructive Decepticon riots that culminated in a reborn Devastator running amok and destroying vast swaths of the city. Plan for Everything Decepticon-turned-rhetorician Starscream took advantage of Megatron's defeat, cast off his insignia, and declared that Iacon was a city for NAILs and NAILs alone: those who refused to revoke their badges would be cast out into the wilds of Cybertron. Second Exodus

Starscream and his new citizens struggled to get the ravaged city back up and running, but it wasn't long before a "death wave" created by a recently arrived Necrotitan quickly undid whatever progress they had managed to make and then some, engulfing the city in flames. Winners & Losers In the remains of the city, the Autobots and Decepticons made their mutual stand against Shockwave and his Ammonite allies, aiming to thwart his mad attempt to destroy the universe. When that crisis had passed, the Titan Metroplex transformed into his city mode and integrated himself into what remained of Iacon. His city mode provided energy, housing, and a stable seat of power for Starscream's NAIL government. The World of Tomorrow The recently arrived Camien Windblade turned her cityspeaker skills towards nursing Metroplex back to health. When Sentinel Prime returned to life after a long convalescence, he attacked Iacon's Decepticon ghetto. The Last Autobot While he eventually fled Cybertron, he soon found Luna 1 and decided to purge the planet of its "impurities" by reanimating a horde of undead Titans and siccing them on Iacon. Last Light Transformers from all across Iacon and the colonies came together to defend the city; even Metroplex transformed into his robot mode to help defeat his undead brethren. Metroplex was eventually felled however prompting Starscream to ask Elita One to send Carcer down as aid only for Elita to refuse. Surfeit of Primes This was a ruse, and the moment Onyx was invited into the Spire, he and his so-called prisoner unleashed chaos across the city, killing Alpha Trion and laying bare a series of accusations against Soundwave that culminated in a series of riots that swept across the city and left the Council of Worlds unable to govern for the duration of the crisis. The Ground Though Onyx was soon unmasked as a time-travelling Shockwave, and arrested, the Transformers were unable to prevent his ultimate plan for the Cybertronian race from reaching fruition. When Megatron conquered Cybertron and Optimus Prime fled, Iacon was abandoned by its inhabitants. When G.I. Upon finding Cliffjumper alive and well, Rodimus contacted Optimus Prime at Iacon and was ordered to bring back the lost hero immediately. Rodimus did, admitting to a decidedly confused Cliffjumper that he was impressed Optimus Prime was interrupting his hobbies just to welcome him back. Only just inside the Iacon main complex, the duo was greeted by Optimus Prime, who was thrilled to see his good friend alive. Cliffjumper was merely confused, a condition that only worsened as he was led further into the headquarters and found "his" comrades revelling in atrocities that would be more suited for Decepticons. He spoke up against it and was promptly shot down for his audacity. Optimus Prime considered killing him, but for the sake of their old friendship, he instead had Cliffjumper dumped in the Rad Zone where he could either re-earn his Autobot insignia or die trying.

SG Ark.jpg

However, the Decepticons found Cliffjumper before he even woke up and brought him with them to Polyhex, where Cliffjumper learned he had somehow traveled to a dimension in which the Autobots were evil and the Decepticons good. Hearing of the Autobots plan to build a ship to reach other planets with and subsequently conquer them, Cliffjumper agreed to help Megatron's troops destroy the launching platform. The assault was initiated at sundown and started with two of the Predacons taking out the platform's guards. Next, Starscream, Whisper and Divebomb flew in and bombed the energon storage tanks near the platform's support beams with glass gas bombs. The tanks did not explode though, and so it came to a battle between the two armies. When Megatron took a shot from Optimus for Cliffjumper, the latter's indecision who to trust was undone and he finished the job of getting the tanks to explode on his own. With the platform collapsing badly, the Decepticons retreated victorious. Shattered Glass

A battle in Khon didn't end in the Autobots' favor. First and foremost, they lost the Arch-Ayr fuel depot, which contents they needed repair the Ark, to the Decepticons, but before they did, Wheeljack returned from exile with a small army of Dinobots. Dinobots who he couldn't control and either killed one another or fled the battlefield, leaving the brutes' strength an asset up for grabs only if the Autobots could retrieve them before the Decepticons would. After discussing a few matters with his officers, Optimus Prime sent out his troops to capture as many Dinobots as possible. What they returned with were eight specimina, but also the information that Grimlock, the strongest Dinobot, had perished during the hunt. Optimus Prime was very much not pleased, but before he could kill anyone, Grimlock showed up in the main complex alive, well and willing to join the Autobot cause if his sovereignty would be acknowledged. Optimus accepted the deal with some reluctance. Dungeons & Dinobots

Partially with Grimlock's aid, the Autobots repaired the launching platform and prepared the Ark for launch once more. To prevent a setback like last time, the platform had been reinforced with stone, on which the glass gas had no effect. More so the number of anti-air artillery emplacements and guards had been drastically increased. These details did not go unnoticed by the Decepticons, who gave up on a second attack, instead preparing a ship of their own to pursue the Ark with once it'd be launched. The lack of Decepticon hostilities put the Autobots in Iacon in a good mood, including Optimus Prime. This peace was ruined when Jazz let it slip that his brother Ricochet had captured Megatron and was keeping him hostage in the Temple of Knowledge. Declaring that only he may kill Megatron, Optimus Prime ran off to the Temple of Knowledge. This development pleased Rodimus, who both longed to be Autobot leader himself and leave the dead husk of a planet Cybertron had become behind. Quickly finding himself allies among the troops, Rodimus and his followers kicked those loyal to Optimus Prime out of the Ark and left with it to Earth. Optimus return to Iacon was marked by fury over both the betrayal and his troops inability to stop it. Despite that Cybertron had entered the Plait Expanse and no other ship could leave the planet for a year, Optimus ordered preparations to be made for a second launch. Do Over

Cameras had been placed near Optimus Prime's chambers to await his reaction upon hearing of his nemesis's passing. Rook noted he felt sorry for whoever would bring Optimus the bad news, a sentiment that grew bigger when it turned out to be he himself who was the messenger, since Optimus was one of ABN's viewers. Barricade hailed from Iacon, Transformers Vault and Alpha Trion, Optimus Prime and Jazz worked at the Hall of Records. The latter two would drink at Maccadam's. The High Council would meet in a tower built over Teletraan-1, which contained the Plasma Energy Chamber and the dormant Omega Supreme. Vector Sigma was also located beneath the city, and Six Lasers Over Cybertron and the Manganese Mountains were nearby. Iacon remained unmolested until the end of the war, as the Autobots also held Kalis. The cities were linked by a fusion-power conduit across the Kali-Con Plain, which produced enough fusion energy for the city the city's formidable anti-aircraft turrets. Art, music and maintenance of the DataNet continued. The Decepticons infiltrated Teletraan-1 to steal the Chamber so they could poison Cybertron's core with Dark Energon, causing Omega Supreme to crash into the city. When the Autobots left Cybertron on the Ark, Decepticons flooded into the city. Exodus

Shockwave and his Insecticon minions would eventually take up residence in the Autobot's former capital and used conscripted slave labour to build his newest tower. From here, he carried out his brutal regime. Shockwave came to view the entire city and its subjugated citizens as his personal laboratory, and saw Autobot guerrillas as welcome variables to cull the weak and enhance the strong. Although the Wreckers and other scattered pockets of Autobot resistance attacked Decepticon convoys moving in and out of Iacon, they could not retake the city. They were fed information by Maccadam, who had turned his bar into the hub of the Autobot resistance's spy network.

Iacon was eventually invaded by Quintessons, who managed to get as far as the Hall of Records before the invasion was foiled. In the heat of battle, the Wrecker Rack n' Ruin destroyed Shockwave's tower with some stolen demolition charges, although Shockwave himself had already escaped Iacon's borders. Retribution

Transformers: War for Cybertron (Xbox 360/PS3/PC)

Cybertron's capital city, Iacon was held by the Autobots during the Great War. When Megatron sought the Omega Key, he deployed the Decepticon army to invade Iacon for the artifact. When he found that Zeta Prime had spirited away the Key, Megatron led his inner retinue through Iacon's backroads and underground until he arrived at the Vaults where he defeated Zeta Prime and claimed the Key.

Following Megatron infecting Cybertron's core with Dark Energon, the Decepticons had claimed Iacon. As Dark Energon crystals sprouted throughout the city, Cybertron itself reformatted the infrastructure into repair rays to try and fight off the corruption. Rallying under Optimus, the Autobots managed to retake their capital. When Optimus - now Optimus Prime - learnt that the Dark Energon had made Cybertron uninhabitable, the Autobots began an evacuation of their home out from Iacon before Trypticon began bombing the city from orbit. After he was forced back to his robot mode by the Aerialbots, the Titan fell into the Iacon where Optimus Prime defeated him. Iacon subsequently became the construction site for the Ark. Transformers: Fall of Cybertron

As the remainder of the Autobot fleet launched from Iacon, Trypticon's body was disassembled for his energon stores, his power fuelling the city and the Ark's construction. Just as the ship was ready to launch, the Decepticons managed to invade the city again, thanks to Grimlock deserting his post. Thanks to Optimus' discovery of Metroplex, the Autobots were able to repulse the invasion and near fatally wound Megatron. When the Decepticon leader was repaired, he found that Starscream's hedonism had drained the Decepticon supplies. Now forced to evacuate Cybertron as well, Megatron led an assault on Iacon to claim Trypticon's power core for a space vessel. Discovering that Trypticon was still alive, Megatron instead forced Trypticon to transform into his starship mode, using him as an evacuation vessel. After the Decepticons had opened a space bridge to another world, the Autobots launched the Ark from Iacon, powered by Metroplex's energon, and made for the portal. Fall of Cybertron

Generation 1

I can see my house from here.
Iacon is one of two distinguishable cities molded into the surface of Primus's planet mode. It features many major landmarks as depicted in the Dreamwave Generation One comics and DK's Transformers: The Ultimate Guide, such as the Stellar Galleries, the Decagon, the Chamber of the Ancients, and the Tower of Pion.
The other distinguishable landmark is the Decepticon fortress Kolkular, which, similar to the depiction on the Cybertron map in Transformers: The Ultimate Guide, is placed on the opposite end of the toy from Iacon. The War Within comics also describe Iacon being built on the surface above buried planetary engines that could conceivably maneuver Cybertron through space; likewise, the toy places Iacon directly over Primus's shoulder cannon shafts. Both of these details, however, are likely a coincidence.

Merchandise

  • RISK TRANSFORMERS CYBERTRON Battle Edition (2007)
Iacon is one of the green zones on the board. Other "Iaconian" locations on the board include the Border Regions, the High Council Pavilions, the Chamber of the Ancients, the Decagon, the Stellar Galleries, and the Tower of Pion.
  • Transformers Monopoly (2007)
Iacon replaces North Carolina Ave in this version of the game. Autobase, Decagon, Maccadam's Old Oil House, and Shockwave's Tower also have a spot on the board.

Notes

  • Iacon, described as 'the mightiest Autobot stronghold of all' and identified as the launch site for the Autobots' ill-starred asteroid-clearing mission, appears in Jim Shooter's original story treatment for The Transformers, and is therefore one of the oldest story elements of the entire brand.[1]
  • The original script for "More than Meets the Eye, Part 1" described Iacon as specifically looking like "a futuristic version of Texas Stadium in Dallas". Iacon having a glass dome was actually preferable, as Texas Stadium was known for having a giant hole in its own roof.
