Josephus

Josephus was a Jewish historian and soldier whose historical works are among the most valuable sources for the study of early Judaism and early Christianity. At the beginning of the war between the Romans and Jews, he was made commander of Galilee. After surrendering to the Romans, he won the favor of the Roman general Vespasian and lived in Rome under imperial patronage, where he wrote his Greek-language historical works. Why is his surrender to the Romans still controversial? More...

This bust is said to be of Josephus... I think not. The figure in the bust has a classic Patrician nose.

so the guy changed sides (not saying he had a better choice) - it does make his history a bit suspect, though!

To Percivalpecksniff:

Being the illustrious nit-picker that you are:), I am wondering if Josephes's nose is the typical nose of Turkey? If a "Patrician" nose implies having an "Aristocratic" nose, "Aristocratic" meaning the original founders of Italy or Rome, then it must be the nose of Aeneas in Virgil's story the Aeneid , who having made his way to Italy after fleeing Troy,he and his kin became the founders of Rome. Otherwise, one would have to speculate upon the noses of Romulus and Remus--another myth--but then, I think we would be talking about snouts...:)

(I think the man has a great nose by the way:))

I thought he looked as if he'd been in a fight. Incidentally there seems to be a problem with Josephus's 'Roman Roulette'. If you are killing every third person, how do you cope with the situation when there are only two left? I suppose you would have to sort that out at the beginning to avoid an argument.

Me a nit-picker? Perish the thought,( by the way you spelled Josephus wrongly.) I myself am in possession

of a classic Patrician nose, have been all my life, and am in no doubt that I descended from the man

himself… I refer to Julius of course. The Patricians were the ruling class of Rome as befits an ancestor of

mine… and I am unanimous about this.

Holy books define religions. The holy books of Josephus's time are not the same as the holy books of Jews now.

Actually he was a Hebrew and not a Jew as most historian claim. He was also of the priestly bloodline, those that made atonement's and sacrifices. The Jewish religion came into being only after the holy books of the religion of Israel was changed. In the days of Josephus, the holy books were the Torah and the Talmud didn't exist. The Talmud started after 70AD, after Rome sacked Jerusalem.
