Original Rider Waite Tarot Pack?

Asbestos Mango

I've got the US Games "yellow box" RWS with the plaid back. I was happy with it at first, but the more I look at it, the more I'm put off by the poor quality of the printing on the cards. The typeface titles don't bother me much, but they don't help, either.

I've placed the Original Rider Waite Tarot Pack (handwritten letters) in my Amazon cart, but I'm a little concerned. The reviews seem to be mostly good, although one reviewer said the cards looked a little "orangey", but also said it gave them a kind of antique look. It does have the original Tudor Rose back design. It also comes with a copy of the Pictorial Key to the Tarot (which I have found to be an incredibly dry read, but it's interesting for it's historical value)

I would like a better print of the RWS for reading with. For about fourteen bucks, it this pack worth the money? Or would I be no better off than with the deck I have.

ETA- I just found Kat Black's review, and she seems to think it's great. Apparently the colors are more muted than on newer versions of the deck, which also appeals to me.

I like the Original Rider Waite Tarot Deck. Mine is 1993 version, and it came with a tiny LWB named 'The Rider Tarot cards'.

The colours are softer than other Waite decks, with more yellows and soft greens. I found the other decks I had too harsh with their sharp colours. Over the years I've given all my other Waite decks away to friends getting started with Tarot, so I can't compare them now.

But for my taste, I can only say that this is the Waite deck that I decided years ago would be the one I'd keep.

There are at least four versions of the ORW - two Belgium printings (one with Temperance on the cover of the box and one that looks like all the other printings), one Italy printing and a China printing. Having done a side-by-side comparison of the printings, I like the one with Temperance on it the best, but another person who was there preferred the China printing. I don't think anyone preferred the Italy printing.

Don't know if what you're looking at shows where the set was printed, but that info could make a lot of difference.

well, the one I'm looking at has a publishing date of 1993. I really don't mind the bright colors on the one I have now, but the print quality is just the suck. Many features are indistinct that are quite distinct on my Pocket RWS.

I'd like a couple more opinions before I click on the "order" button, but I'm feeling like I'm going to go with this deck.

I like the Original very much but many people also like the PCS Commemorative set deck which I am this week learning to like. They are both decks which many members here like (don't know about an orangey hue though. Mine doesn't have that). Many people are put off by the price and the extras but the deck really is a lovely deck.

I'm not sure how many would say the plaid-backed/yellow box/typefaced title edition is their favourite...

Why can't US Games just do what everyone wants them to do; a cleaned up deck like the PCS Commeorative set deck but with the Original RWS backs? We end up just having to argue for half a dozen or so decks, none of which are as Pixie/A.E Waite wanted it.

Look up the Radiant Rider Waite deck, see if you like that

I just gave away my Radiant Rider Waite. Attractive enough deck, but when I read with it, I just wasn't feeling it.

My deck was printed in Belgium 1993 and has the Temperance card on the back of the blue box. Other details as my post above.

My Temperance card on the back of the box appears to be exactly the same colours as the temperance card on the back of that box, even though the box is different, as mine has no large book.

If fact the cards shown on the Amazon ad are a pretty good representation of the colours of my deck.

They look nicer (more like the PCS Commemorative deck) than my original 70's deck, with its very 'primary' colourways... I love mine because it was my first ever deck, though. The deck you linked to on amazon does look lovely, though :)
