Im very interested.
I signed the list at cal customs, i have been vocal on all threads concerning this and now i have voted here... how much data gathering is necesarry?
Well, given that so far, whatever we've all said here or at Cal Customs hasn't resulted in them (or anyone) doing a tank, I thought if we had a list in one place of how many people were interested and at what price point, that would allow us either to conclude that we're ****ing in the wind, or else go to Cal Customs or someone else and tell them that there are ** people ready to buy at a certain price point, and are they interested? Often you can get someone to develop a product if there's good proof that there's a market.

I voted yes, if under $500. And I would have to say I wouldn't want it if the look was to far off from stock.

This is the only reason i dont have one 12 litres is just no good
i ended up buying a 2008 tuono factory instead but the dorsa i can throw it about like a rag doll all day long
This will be interesting to see where the extra volume is going to go. I'm familiar fitting larger tanks to offroaders and to go from a 9L to a 13L on my 2 stroke they had to lower the tank into the gap between the existing tank down as low as the cases/fuel tap would allow (lots of room on 2 stroke dirt bike, don't think there is any room there on the Dorso), PLUS a bulge on top of the tank which required a slight re-moulding of the seat base to conform to it. On the newer 4 stroke efi models the only place for the extra fuel to go is up higher on top (would require new tank cover/panels/or seat) or wings off the side, which would change the look of the bike from motard to enduro/woods bike. Then there is the problem of heat and the in tank fuel pump problems.
I think there is some room under the side panels, but the radiator overflow and some other parts might need to be redesigned as well. I went for the $500 price point, since I think I could put together a rack mounted fuel can (RotopaX?) for about the same. I would prefer a larger tank, but can't justify paying twice as much.
I have also been watching for someone who has tried to fit the DD1200 tank on the 750. I would imagine the tank would be expensive from Aprilia, so it would need to be someone who owned both sizes, or a dealer willing to experiment.
When the 750 was developed, Aprilia said the frame was designed with the 1200 motor in mind. Given that similarity, it may be possible to switch the tank, seat, and side panels as a bolt on conversion.
personally, im happy to fill it up every hundred miles rather than change the look of the bike. i dont think that a bigger tank plus redesigned fairings etc would cost less than 500 bucks.
House of the MOTO
I looked under the front panels last night out of curiosity. The left side has some electronics that would need to be moved, and the right has the overflow tank, which is too big to place anywhere else. A smaller one would suffice. I think another 2 liters would fit without changing the look of the bike.
You're probably right about the price, though. Who, in today's market, could produce a tank for $500? Instead, why not produce two small auxiliary tanks that would be plumbed to the sides of the original? All three would fill from the standard location, and drain to the OEM tank. The kit would include a few brackets for the left side electronics, a redesigned overflow, and two 1-liter auxiliary tanks with plumbing. That seems doable to me.
Camelback full of fuel
Or go for a smaller battery and move father back...or infront of the header like the KTM's. Between raising center tank height and using battery location could add a gallon, is it worth $1k?
need to measure out a 1200 tank.
Buy a touring bike. DD isn't one. There I solved it.
