India is the fruit and vegetable basket of the world. India being a home of wide variety of fruits and vegetables holds a unique position in production figures among other countries. Over 90% of India’s exports in fresh products goes to west Asia and East European markets. However, it needs to augment its food and processing industry at a mega scale, according to an agriculture consultant.

India’s exports of Fresh Fruit and Vegetable has increased from Rs. 1658.72 Crores (USD Million 374.68) in 2005-06 to Rs. 2411.66 Crores (USD Million 534.97) in 2006-07. Which is including the products like Fresh Onion, Walnut, Fresh Mangos, Fresh Grapes and other fresh Fruits & Vegetables?

Abundant investment opportunities are there in expanding the export market. An increasing acceptance of new products with market development efforts has been witnessed lately given the fact that there is a good international demand for certain fruits and vegetable products. India ranks fifth in the world in cropped area under cultivation and production of potatoes. India produces 41% of world’s mangoes, 23%bananas, 24% cashew nuts, 36 % green peas and 10% onion The total export value of the main exporting fruit crop from India is mango. Exports of mangoes, grapes, mushrooms have started going to the United Kingdom, Middle East, Singapore and Hong Kong. and among vegetable, onion occupies first position  Potatoes and green vegetables like okra, bitter gourd, green chillies have good export potential.

FRESH ONIONS
 
India is 2nd largest onion growing country in the world. Indian onions are famous worldwide for their pungency. India has two crop cycles of Onion, one harvesting start in Nov to Jan & second harvesting start in Jan to May. Indian Onion is available round the year The Gulf countries are the main importers of the onion bulb, and neighboring Pakistan and China are India's main competitors in the global market. India’s Export of Onion has increased from Rs. 708.15 Crores (USD Million 159.96) in 2005-06 to Rs.1163.30 Crores (USD Million 258.05) in 2006-07. Bnagladesh, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, U.A.E, Pakistan and Nepal are the Major market of Indian Onion.

India's onion production is likely to rise by 11.9 percent to a record 7.45 million tonnes India, the world's second largest producer, is likely to have 527,719 hectares (1.30 million acres) under the cultivation in 2007/08, up from last year's 478,440 hectares. India has produced a record production of 6.66 million tonnes in 2006/07.
 
OTHER FRESH VEGETABLES
India is the second largest producer of Vegetables that account about 16 per cent of the world production. Major vegetables grown in India are Potato, Onion, Tomato, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Bean, Egg Plants, Cucumber and Garkin, Frozen Peas, Garlic and okra. The area under Vegetable was covered 7164000 Ha with a production of 109050 MT in 2005-06.  India’s export of other vegetable has increased from Rs. 267.69 Crores (USD Million 60.47) in 2005-06 to Rs. 430.02 Crores (USD Million 95.39) in 2006-07. The major importing countries of Indian Vegetable are U.A.E, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bangladesh.
 
WALNUTS
Walnut is one of the major nuts imported from India. World production of walnut is estimated at 1.1 million tones, with major producing countries being USA, China, Iraq and Turkey. A temperate fruit belonging to the Juglladaceae family walnut is grown in India in the cold regions of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh. The major competitors in the international market are USA, China and Israel. USA is the major exporter. India’s Export of Walnut has Increased from Rs. 114.47 Crores (USD Million 25.86) in 2005-06 to Rs. 118.03 Crores (USD Million 36.18) in 2006-07. The major destinations for export of Indian walnuts are Spain, U.K, Netherlands, Germany and Egypt.
     
FRESH MANGOES
Mango, called the king of fruits in India, accounts for 40 percent of the national fruit production of 22.168 million tonnes a year. It occupies 42 percent of the country's 24.87 million hectares land under fruit cultivation. India exported 79,060.88 MT of fresh mangoes with the value of Rs. 141.93 Crores (USD Million 31.48) in 2006-07. The major varieties of mangoes exported include Dashehri, Alphonso, Kesar, Banganpalli, Kesar, Dusheri, Langra, Chausa, Mallika and. Swarnrekha. The Major markets for Indian mangoes are U.A.E, Bangladesh, U.K, Saudi Arabia and Nepal. India is estimated to account for about 60 percent (9.5 million tonnes) of the world's mango production of 15.7 million tones. The major production areas in the country are in the state of Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Maharastra, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala.
 
FRESH GRAPES
India is one of the leading exporter of fresh table grapes to the global market, India’s export of Grapes has increased from Rs. 214.60 Crores (USD Million 48.48) in 2005-06 to Rs. 301.92 crores (USD Million 66.97) in 2006-07. Major destinations for export of Indian grapes are Netherlands, U.K, U.A.E, Bangladesh and Belgium.

Total table grape exports are expected to reach 30183 containers in 2008, compared to 2500 last year. Number of fresh grape exporters bow registered with the ministry of commerce’s Agricultural and Processed Food Export Development Authority stands at 234.

APEDA has set up a grapenet traceability system in the year 2005-06 which has enabled to trace and trace each grape carton/container up to form level. Its successful implementation has enabled APEDA to bag the national award for E-government (Gold).
 
 
OTHER FRESH FRUITS
India is the largest producer of Fruits in the world and is known as fruit basket of world. The covered area under the fresh fruits in India was 5510000 Ha with the production of 58740000 MT in 2005-06. The major fruits grown in India are Mangos, Grapes, Apple, Apricots, Orange, Banana Fresh, Avocados, Guava, Lichi, Papaya, Sapota and Water Melons. This is due to its potential in different agro climatic zones India’s Export of Fresh Fruits has increased from Rs. 225.67 Crores (USD Million 50.98)  in 2005-06 to 256.43 Crores (USD Million 56.88)  in 2006-07. The Major countries which import Fresh fruits from India are U.K, Netherlands, U.A.E, Russia, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Nepal.
