22 Rare and Stunning Vintage Photos of Black Gentlemen in the Gilded Age Fashions

The Gilded Age in United States history is the late 19th century, from the 1870s to about 1900. The term for this period came into use in the 1920s and 1930s and was derived from writer Mark Twain's 1873 novel The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today, which satirized an era of serious social problems masked by a thin gold gilding.

The early half of the Gilded Age roughly coincided with the middle portion of the Victorian era in Britain and the Belle ร‰poque in France. Its beginning in the years after the American Civil War overlaps the Reconstruction Era (which ended in 1877),. It was followed in the 1890s by the Progressive Era.

Yes, Jim Crow laws were in effect. But there were still plenty of black Americans rockin' those cravats and wide-brimmed hats, too. You just don't see them in most history books.

  1. Beautiful portraits! I so wish all the people were identifiable. Saying their names recognizes and honors our ancestors whether they were acclaimed or humble, privileged or downtrodden. Even so, identified or not, though they may not have been appreciated or even acknowledged outside a small circle during their years on earth, we must say now, “You lived, and we honor and thank you.”

    2. Truly honoured to witness such wonder which had us foiled and mis educated that we were all downtrodden and beaten into nothingness. How fulfilled I feel to see history totally opposite to how we as black children in England growing up in the education system of the seventies believing that we were all good for nothing and will always be good for nothing. Thank you grateful and much appreciated for such photography. Amein Amenetti๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿซ‚
