Eve Online developer creates Oculus Rift VR dogfighting game, unveils EVR at Fanfest

CCP Games, the developer behind Eve Online and Dust 514, has created a first-person, multiplayer dogfighting game set in the Eve universe and designed for the Oculus Rift VR headset. Attendees at CCP's Eve Fanfest in Reykjavik, Iceland are some of the first to get their hands-on the game dubbed EVR.

The arcade-style multiplayer space shooter was built in Unity and developed during CCP developers' personal time, according to a report from PC Gamer. The experimental VR project, created in about seven weeks, reportedly uses some existing Eve Online assets, but does not connect to CCP's complex space simulation game. At least, not yet.

"6v6 instanced combat isn't what Eve — with the whole single shard thing — is about," Eve Online executive producer John Lander told PC Gamer. "Is there a way to work this in? We've got some really interesting questions to look at now."

"God knows what we'll do with this."

EVR uses a combination of gamepad controls and head tracking, according to hands-on impressions posted by Penny Arcade Report.

The game is reportedly far from finished, but for a peek at what EVR looks like, sans virtual reality, check out video of the proof of concept game from CCP's livestream from Fanfest.
