Jez Butterworth’s Olivier Award-winning play The Ferryman will arrive on Broadway with most of its acclaimed London cast intact. Paddy Considine, the Olivier-winning Laura Donnelly and Genevieve O’Reilly will reprise their roles when the play hits New York in October.
The initial casting announcement was made today by producers Sonia Friedman Productions and Neal Street Productions.
Last month, Butterworth’s Northern Irish drama won the Olivier for Best New Play, with director Sam Mendes taking the Best Director award and Donnelly named Best Actress.
The more than 30 Broadway cast members will also include Dean Ashton, Glynis Bell, Gina Costigan, Charles Dale, Justin Edwards, Fra Fee, Fionnula Flanagan, Tom Glynn-Carney, Stuart Graham, Mark Lambert, Carla Langley, Conor MacNeill, Colin McPhillamy, Rob Malone, Dearbhla Molloy, Glenn Speers, and Niall Wright, with further casting to be announced.
The play marks the stage debut for Considine, who won a BAFTA award for his performance as Quinn Carney. Donnelly plays Caitlin Carney, and O’Reilly is Mary Carney.
Set in rural Northern Ireland in 1981, The Ferryman depicts the Carney household as it prepares for the annual harvest, with its hard work followed by feasting and celebration. But the arrival of a visitor interrupts this year’s traditional goings-on.
The Ferryman was developed by Sonia Friedman Productions and produced with Neal Street Productions and The Royal Court Theatre, and opened at The Royal Court in May 2017, becoming the fastest-selling play in the theater’s history. The sold-out show transferred to the Gielgud Theatre in London’s West End, where it was extended three times and will conclude its year-long run on May 19.
Designed by Rob Howell, with lighting by Peter Mumford, and sound and original music by Nick Powell, the production will announce additional Broadway creatives at a later date. Producers on Broadway are Sonia Friedman Productions & Neal Street Productions with Ronald Frankel, Roy Furman, Gavin Kalin Productions, Scott M. Delman, Stephanie P. McClelland, Tulchin Bartner Productions, Kallish Weinstein Creative, Ron Kastner, Starry Night Entertainment, Scott Landis, Steve Traxler, Richard Winkler, Burnt Umber Productions, Rupert Gavin, Scott Rudin, 1001 Nights, William Damaschke, The Shubert Organization, Sam Levy/Lauren Stevens, Ramin Sabi/Christopher Ketner, and Jamie deRoy/Catherine Adler.
The Ferryman begins previews Tuesday, October 2 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, with opening night set for Sunday, October 21.
