Newcastle United striker Nile Ranger has been questioned by detectives after he was arrested on suspicion of rape.
Northumbria Police said they received a call on Thursday that a woman had been raped overnight at a hotel in Jesmond in Newcastle.
A spokesman said a 21-year-old man had been arrested at an address in Forest Hall on suspicion of rape.
He was later released on bail. A club spokeswoman declined to comment about the arrest.
Ranger, a former England under-19 international, has had spells on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley.
The forward made his Premier League debut for Newcastle in 2010.
