Check out articles by Marlene Dobkin de Rios. An article she wrote back in the 1970s for Americas Journal on card divination in South America. It was very influential for me in understanding the role of divination among poor and disenfranchised peoples. You’ll find a picture of her reading tarot cards under “Fieldwork”.

clymela – I’m sure you are going to enjoy your tarot journey. I recommend seeing if there are any tarot events or groups (check Meet-up.com) in your area. Tarot people, in person, are about as friendly as you can get — though they like to argue as much as the next group on some of on-line lists.

The 2002 edition of Tarot for Your Self is revised. Most of the earlier text is the still there with minor corrections and clarifications. I expanded the interpretations for the Minor Arcana and added short reversed card meanings for all 78 cards. The history appendix is completely new as is the introduction. I also added information on the Shadow/Teacher cards as found in Tarot Constellations. I updated the bibliography, citing newer works that add insights to the original materials. Except for the history appendix and the Shadow card information there’s nothing new that would make a core difference in the book. Thanks for asking about this.

hi mary,
i wanna learn the permutations used in tarot “rider waite cards”. like if cups accompanied by wands or 2 queens or two kings appear in spread what does it signifies etc…all permutations can you please help me in this .i would be really grateful….and i wanna know one more thing is it like if i have studied from one book then i can’t refer another the interpretation may vary?

Permutations is a word I use for methods of moving the cards around in a spread in order to get a different perspective on the reading. The relationship between two or more suits in a spread is usually referred to as Elemental Dignities. I list all of these suit/element combinations in my book 21 Ways to Read a Tarot Card. The meanings for multiple cards (2, 3 or 4 Kings, etc.) is based on cartomancy meanings for regular playing cards. You can find one of the most common lists here in an early book on cartomancy by A.E. Waite.
Different books will give a variety of meanings for the cards. You can either stick with one book (or a couple of books that feature the same style deck or tradition) or you can collect books and compare and contrast the different approaches to the cards. Begin with the first approach and, if you find you are serious (or intensely curious) about understanding tarot in depth, then start expanding your studies.
There is no right or wrong set of interpretations for the tarot. Rather, it is important to find what works best for you. The more you use and understand a system the better it will work for you.

Mary, I am so happy to find your literature online and a place to tell you how much I appreciate what you are doing!
I have purchased several books on the Tarot among other metaphysical books. Most books on symbolism include either too little information or overwhelming comparisons to the Kabbalah and other systems, but very few offer the information in a way that is concise and comprehensible. I just ordered a few of your books from Amazon because I was able to have a peek inside. What I found, was the personality/soul journey information. I am so intrigued, that I began answering the questions posed for my combination of numbers, BEFORE receiving your book. Thank you so much for making this information available and for providing a self-learning environment that will keep me journaling for some time. May God Bless you always!

I wish they would republish Tarot Mirrors & Tarot Constellations. I have the first book in the series, but you can’t find the others. I tried buying Tarot Constellations off amazon and they sent me Tarot for yourself instead.
