New Etymotic headphone?

My wallet would like to speak up and say that it worries about this possibility indeed(sonic improvement).

My ears however say, gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme!

My brain is going back and forth between wallet and ears.

One problem I have with the etys is just that the cable is too short. That's about it. LOL Free upgrades for all current Ety owners?

hmmm. from what i'm seeing, people either want short for portable use, or long for home use. i'm all for the whole modular approach, or just making it short with an extension an an optional extra.

personally, i want an er4p (or whatever you're coming up with now) with about a three foot cord to go into a minidisc remote. i hate having heaps of cord to stuff into a pocket when i'm out and about.

may i suggest that the portable biased version, like the 4p, should come with a 3ft cord, and the other one for use with an amp should be longer?

anyone agree?

On the portable version, a 3 to 4 foot cable is ideal, and the length of the cord connecting to the earpieces above where the "Y" splits may be of equal or unequal length. But on the home version, go with about an 8-foot cord - and keep the equal-length "Y".

gluegun, a few things. First, the CD3000's are open by design, not closed. And I haven't heard many people say that they're better than ety's (or at least it's certainly not a wide-spread decision). Second, I have heard of...three problems that etymotics have. The first is the microphinic cord noise. If Etymotic has taken any new steps into helping with this problem, that would be a big step. Second is that they are said to drop off prety fast in the treble after 15-16kHz. that could be improved. The last is a problem that i haven't heard a whole lot about, but apparently it is there: a slight bump in the upper mids. I don't know much about this problem or if it even is a problem, but it is something I've heard. So I'm sure ety's can still be improved.

I don't think the frequency response curve is a problem for anybody except those who haven't listened to them. Reading about them requires that you read the WHOLE STORY about them. The last thing Etymotic Research needs to do is look to Sony as a reference.

The highs are still there. It is just that they are equalized to mimic the sound of something that doesn't originate a few hundreths of an inch from your eardrum. That's also why they have the ER-4B. A binaural dummy head has to "listen" to sounds through a dummy outer ear. As a result, the 'B sends the sounds to your eardrum as the dummy ear hears it, not how your outer ear would hear it.

There are a few involved members here who can vouch for the brightness of the 'B model. Don went to great lengths about the hows and wherefores about all this happy crap when HeadRoom got him first involved at HeadWize.

Perhaps he needs to post that information - as a dreaded "sticky" thread. Or better yet, as a sponsor!!

What is a sticky thread?

Thanks for all of the help. Unfortunately when we first start selling the new model, it will have a 4' un-equal length cord. We will switch to a 5' equal length cable a soon as possible. We may keep two different models for a while if there is a desire for the shorter cable.

The new model will use completely different parts than the ER-4. The goal was to produce a device with a response close to the ER-4S with greater sensitivity, at about half the price. Because of price constraints the cable won't be removeable. Even if the response is close there is always the chance that it might not sound as good as the ER-4. I still plan to make a higher quality version of the ER-4 when I have more time.

If everything works out well the new model will be available this year. I will let you know more when I feel more confident.

A sticky thread is one that always stays at the top of a forum, unless a moderator "de-sticks" it. That is great news about the new etys, but it is unfortunate (to me anyway) that they will come with a unequal-length cord at first. Do you have any idea if the ER-4X will come with a non-microphonic cord?

Hmm, my birthday is in a few months...

Ahhh sweet...my wallet can have a breather! Heh...at least we finally will get a poor man's Ety!

Also do you think there should be any concern about microphonic noise issues with unequaled cording (i.e. unbalanced loading on one ear?). If this was ever annoying in earbuds...I would imagine it to be at least as annoying with Etys. I think it would mandate the use of shirt clip! A problem for those who sold the shirt off their back to get one.
