It was a set that most of Download Festival have been waiting for since 2006, and System of A Down largely delivered a special return.
There was a delay before the show, which seemed to be something to do with the lighting rig. Eventually, a huge banner dropped down to cover the front of the stage (with one corner becoming unattached).
Kicking off with 'Prison Song', the 27-song setlist didn't feel too long or drawn-out despite its length or the delay in the start.
It is hard to pick at System of A Down's choices, with surprises like 'Cigaro' padding out a hit-filled set.
Slightly disappointing was no performance of 'Violent Pornography', but SOAD have more than enough hits to cover this up.
'Chop Suey!' was the main singalong moment of the set, with circle pits emerging all over the packed-out field.
Serj Tankian was on form, but the show seemed to lack any real interaction between the band and audience.
Admittedly this show was meant to give fans the opportunity to see these tracks live, and SOAD had a lot to fit in.
However, it felt very separate from the stage to the audience (not that the crowd seemed to mind).
The atmosphere was incredible, and it did feel truly special during performances of 'Radio/Video' and 'Lonely Day'.
It showed that there is huge demand for a full return. It's clear SOAD can still put on an incredible live show, and they were worthy headliners.
