Radio stutter

Hey guys i've been seeing alot of posts here about people having problems with crashing, and i remember having that first as well. what i did to fix this was install this app called installedcodecs, dont know if it's been mentioned or not, but after installing that i just disable all codecs that do not belong to microsoft or ati/nvidia and fallout 3 runs fine no crashes what so ever. this also got rid of choppy sound and stuff like that... chirping noise during loading and no bgm on the starting screen. so maybe you guys might want to try that? http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/installed_codec.html

 

after gameplay you just enable them again.

Fallout 3 does seem to have a conflict with FFDShow codecs. You have to either uninstall them from your system or add fallout3.exe to FFDShow audio and video decoders exceptions list. Although you may not know it, FFDShow codecs may be present on your system if you have installed codec packs such as CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack).

How to add Fallout 3 to FFDShow decoder exceptions list

1. Launch the ffdshow video decoder configuration window. You may access this through the start menu. If you have installed any codec packs, check the start menu entries of those. If you can�t find it on the start menu, right click the ffdshow video decoder (red) icon that appears on the taskbar when a supported video file is playing, and select ffdshow video decoder option from the menu. ffdshow_icon

2. Tick the Dont use ffdshow in checkbox if not already checked

3. Press the edit button that is next to the text field. A new dialog box will pop up. Press the Add button. The Add incompatible executable file� dialog box will be displayed. Browse to the Fallout 3 installation directory and locate fallout3.exe file. Select it and press open. Close all dialog boxes currently open by pressing ok.

(OR you can simply type fallout3.exe at the end of the text field next to �Dont use ffdshow in� checkbox)

4. Repeat steps 2-3 in ffdshow audio decoder configuration (the blue icon in taskbar) window as well. It is important that you add fallout3.exe to both ffdshow audio and video decoder�s expections list.

Im too getting stuttering radio, its really annoying, even standinf in a silent dark place staringa t the floor to reduce system load i still get stutter makes no difference ata ll, ive tried telling my codecs not to work in game and even done a reinstall in case the music files got corrupted to no avail,

im using the Asus Soundmax pcie audio card that came with my mboard and had no problems with it until this.

I think there are the following options you could try:

1) Uninstall all codecs cine_eater mentioned (post 17), the last posts (21 and 22) should help.

-> This are: ffdshow, arcsoft, AC3, Xvid

2) Install k-Lite Codec basic like recommended in post 16 by pimpbot

3) Try install MADFilter. (don't forget to reboot after the install, could cause scratching noises)

4) Use another driver for your card

5) try doubling audio cache like suggested by frankc (post 2)

6) ... Anybody else?

personally ive uninstalled those codecs, im already using klite codecs, doubled the audio cache, the only think i havnt checked is if theres newer drivers for the card, ill look at the now

updated to the latest driver, now the stuttering and crap is worse than ever

but changing driver seemes to be a good way...

you also could try to play some mono mp3s. you have a pm, how you can check this quickly

Ahm, are the radio speaker stuttering too?

Because:

The reason if radio speakers do not stutter is: they use the .ogg format

so they use an ogg - codec

in that case I really really suggest you to try to deactivate or change some codecs.

this little tool InstalledCodec is thery practical to deactivate codecs. You`ll have to find out wich codec is the evil one.

Here my suggestion how to do:

1) load the little tool

2) run the InstalledCodec.exe

3) Disable all Codecs (Ctrl + A to select all, then disable all)

4) Sort to Type: Select Type -> hold shift and push arrow up/down to select all driver – video -> enable them

5) Sort to company: Select company -> shift + arrow -> enable all “Microsoft Corporation” Codecs

6) Enable the 2 company = Fraunhofer Institut Integrierte Schaltungen IIS – Codecs

Named: Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec and MPEG Layer-3 Decoder

and the codecs company = Sipro Lab Telecom Inc.

7) Load a game and see what is happening (wait a while, because of the audio cache)

tried agathas station and it is affected too, i did try rencodine the music files to a lower bitrate and that did help but didnt cure it, its annoying becouse i didnt have this problem to start with, it just started happening, i tried uninstalling the mods i been using, none of them afftect the radio but to be honset im kinda out of ideas as to what caused it to suddenly start stuttering.

i also checked the music files outside of the gamejust to check they were ok and my installed codecs wernt buggered (personally i use ogg vorbis for my music, with the exception of a odd few tracks, so i wouldnt nesecarily notice if my mp3 codec was buggered) but they are fine, ill try disabling all but the essentials like you suggest, i hope if does fix it, doesnt change how annoying this is though,

increasing the audio buffer to 32mb doesnt help either........ im fact im getting distortoin and artifacts now....

i think ill uninstall fallout AND all my codecs and do a clean install, i have a feeling something has become corrupted somewhere

well ive completly uninstalled all my codecs leaving just the default windows stuff, and ..... no difference whatsoever, still stuttering, ive waited in game for nearly a month to clear the audio cache and still the same, at the moment i think im getting too annoyed with it to think of a solution :(

i was pretty sure but listened though the messed up music to checka nd see if three dog etc are affected, and their not, i can hear threedog clearly, same with pres eden and agatha, its only the music in the pipboy thats affacted (wasteland radios work fine)

are you using vista or xp? maybe its a codec that I suggested to let activated? ...

but now I m running a little out of ideas.

but please decrease your audio cache. waiting a month is not funny. :)

Have you already reinstalled fallout? With deleting everything (game dir + my games folder + clean registry)?
