Mafuyu Hinasaki is a novice journalist.
One day, he receives a strange request to go with "him".
As he heads for their meeting, his younger sister Miku stops him.
"Please, don't go."
Though he learns of the ominous premonition of his sister, who has a strong sixth sense, he cannot refuse work and sets out.
And thus, Miku's prediction is realised.
The ordinary day collapses around him as Mafuyu visits the old mansion, as though something is leading him there.

The Zero Novel is a novelisation of the first Fatal Frame game, released in Japan in early 2002. It uses the story and characters of the game, but in an original story centred around Mafuyu Hinasaki, told mostly from his viewpoint. A small number of illustrations were provided by Yukinari. The novel was only ever published in Japanese.
