First of all I was exhausted when making this, so bare with the vocals. It's not a really long video. I hope that it helps!
This is a quick workaround for the new version of 3ds max. If you're using 2013 or before you won't have this issue and this video will be irrelevant to you. However, if you did upgrade you will have probably noticed that they switched up the lock zoom and pan methods to work only in perspective view. While this can work, I find it messy and a pain to deal with. This is what I have found to counter that problem.
This is not a perfect solution of course, and if anyone has a better way of doing things feel free to share. I don't know if this has been put out there before and if it has then I'm sorry. But, I couldn't find any videos that gave a good solution and so when I figured this out I decided to make one.
The tool I used for the image plane can be found here: jokermartini.com/2013/03/13/plane-plus/
I encourage you to check out this guys stuff, a lot of it is really useful and it's not expensive.
Last but not least I'd like to thank the guy that showed me how to accomplish a similar result using the new 2d pan zoom option in the perspective view. I just really like modeling with reference images from orthographic views.
