The detective sergeant who was forced to retire after being infected with novichok while investigating the Salisbury poisonings is still fighting to be paid his pension, it emerged yesterday.

Nick Bailey suffered hallucinations and nearly died after exposure to the nerve agent in March 2018 when he went to the home of Sergei Skripal, a former Russian spy.

He spent two weeks in hospital, including time in intensive care and did not return to active duty for ten months after the poisoning. He was forced to announce his retirement in October, when he said that he “had to admit defeat and accept that I can no longer do the job”.

Wiltshire police paid tribute to his bravery but Mr Bailey’s wife Sarah has now criticised
