I have recently learned how to set up hard disk under WinUAE, install Workbench, WHDLoad etc. Only to play F1 for the compo, I don't really plan to use the settings extensively, as what I am doing is still a bit mysterious to me. Only when I have to which means when adfs for the desired game don't work.
But since I already have this setup, I have downloaded WHDLoad version of Dune 2, which does not work for me in adf version. And I get the following error:
What does this mean? Should I run the game under different WinUAE settings, with different Kickstart? (I am using A1200, Kickstart 3.1 for F1)
WHDLoad = DOS error #205 on reading kickstarts

I had similar issues when I was installing ClassicWB to use WHDLoad and yeah, some games need those kickstart files to be in the "devs:kickstart" folder within the ClassicWB environment to run and they need to be named appropriately. It took a while to figure out but it's something to do with some WHDLoad games using a kickemu, which needs access to the kickstarts to run, and it won't access the ones WinUAE is using from your computer, they need to be on the "Amiga side", so to speak.
I'm not totally clued up on the technical side of this admittedly and my memory is a bit hazy from when I did it, so apologies if I've got any of this slightly wrong. From my understanding though it's a case of getting the kickstarts, renaming them, then copying them from your PC into the devs:kickstarts folder. You can just run WinUAE in windowed mode and drag them from your PC into the window, open the folder(s) that appear then move them from inside those to where you need them.
This might help :-
http://www.whdload.de/docs/en/need.html
From my understanding the main ones you need are a Kickstart 1.3 image, renamed as kick34005.A500 and a 3.1, renamed as kick40068.A1200, if you're using Cloanto's Amiga Forever kickstarts you'll also need to copy the rom.key file, I think.
Those two were fine and have run everything I've thrown at it, it solved the issue and you shouldn't have to reinstall anything or start over.
As an additional point, if you haven't used this already give iGame a try, just right click anywhere once ClassicWB is running, select WHDLoad from the menu which appears then select iGame, you can use this as a front end to launch WHDLoad games, particularly useful if you've got a lot of them.

No. You need to get the right kickstart file(s) and rename them accordingly, they go in Devs:kickstarts/eMTe wrote:Ok, but if I download one, do I need to create another setup and install all programs once again for new Kickstart?Acid wrote:The required kickstart is either not in the correct location or is named incorrectly. Kickstart 34.5 is the one.
The one you need is called
Kickstart v1.3 rev 34.5 (1987)(Commodore)(A500-A1000-A2000-CDTV).rom
^^ highlight that entire line and google it, you'll find it on the first link if you need it ^^
then rename it to kick34005.A500 and put it in the Devs:kickstarts/
you should already have some files there with similar names ending in .rtb if not you need some files from

Amiga Kickstart 1.3 (34.5) (A500-A2500-A3000-CDTV) (Commodore) (1987).rom
so almost identically, but not alike. I believe it's the correct one, though?
But I still have to create new setup and install older Workbench version under these new settings, because 1.3 is not the correct Kickstart for the settings I am using now (A1200). And Workbench version is also 3.1. Am I right?
Thank you both for long informative posts.

No you are confusing what these kickstarts are going to be used for. You can use whdload on any version of workbench. The way whdload works is if a game will only run on say ks1.3 for example and you are running 3.0, it needs to to use the old kickstart to make the correct environment for the game to work.eMTe wrote:But I still have to create new setup and install older Workbench version under these new settings, because 1.3 is not the correct Kickstart for the settings I am using now (A1200). Think of it this way, if you have a really old game on floppy disk but it's not compatible with ks3... you could put in the Relokick 1.4 disk and then you would magically reboot with ks1.3 loaded.... then the game runs on top of that and it works. That is the exact same way whdload works.... it's just it uses the kickstart that would normally have been loaded from the Relokick disk so you need these files in the correct place for it load them.
And yes I would think that rom you already have will do the job, just rename it and put it in the right place.
